Italian Espresso Machines Reviewed
Do you want to buy your own espresso machine but not sure how to choose from the many espresso machines found in the stores? The first thing one needs to do is gain an understanding of how these espresso makers work so that one can ask the right questions.
Using best quality coffee in a tightly packaged container, most machines force very hot water under pressure through the coffee. The oils in the coffee are extracted to produce a superb, smooth shot of espresso every time.
If the machine is already prepped – water heated and pump primed – it should be able to produce a shot within a few seconds. The time it takes to express the cup of coffee depends mostly on the coarseness of the coffee being used. On the whole, finer grinds allow the coffee to pour faster than more coarsely ground coffee. Some espresso makers come with a steam making device to allow you to make milk drinks as well, such as cappuccinos or lattes. The milk is steamed by the machine in order for it to become frothy for the top of the coffee when it is served. The choice of espresso makers can be overwhelming. Types of machine range from basic stove top models to complex, fully automatic devices, plus of course the pump or steam driven original types of machine.
One of the tricks to making good espresso is choice of coffee. and picking the right blend for you is crucial. Choosing the right blend is important – more important than other coffee techniques – because more of the taste filters through and if you want smooth and sweet, you need to pick wisely.
Some dark roasted blends are over cooked for making espresso and have lost some of the natural sweet, sugary tastes.
A dark roasted espresso will create a bitter tasting cup of coffee that resembles the taste of charcoal. If the water in your area leaves an after taste, it is probably advisable to use filtered or spring water instead of normal tap water. The espresso machine you pick must also be able to consistently heat the water to the same temperature every time and this needs to be around 95 degrees c.
